First before we delve into this it is critical we understand that the OEM dash cluster in the C5 corvette is an integral part of its data network. If you want to make use of an AIM dash you should NEVER remove the OEM gauge cluster and attempt to remove and replace it with an AIM dash. A number of key sensors bypass the engine ECU and are only reported to the C5 corvettes data network through their interconnection to the gauge cluster. Understanding that why WOULD you want a AIM dash and how is it best used? Lets break down a few key reasons why an AIM dash can supercharge your data system and let it do more heavy lifting for you and leave you to focus on the fun part.

Increased real estate

Plain and simple, a full dash is bigger. The screen on the solo2 simply falls down when considering information density. If you like being fed more info or your eyesight isn’t what it used to be, a dash is the way to go.

Drive calls to action

The Solo2DL will log everything but it is display limited and cannot do complex conditional alarms. Even the most basic AIM logger dash has a robust rule / alert system allowing you to build nuanced and complex alerts so you can get a simple light and/or message on the dash to tell you water temp is rising, or oil pressure is low versus diverting critical attention from the business of driving.

Switched outputs

Many dash and loggers have software switched outputs allowing you to create varied and complex conditions under which your data system can begin to be proactive.

Example: In a boosted car you may want to trigger intercooler a water spray system when throttle is above 50% AND IAT above 100 AND speed over 30mph ensuring that the data system will help manage IAT for you.

Capabilities Expansion

The Dash/Logger systems offer a large number of in-built analog channels and can support multiple CAN modules to expand your visibility beyond what sensors the car came packaged with from GM.

  • Add linear analog sensors to each shock to fine-tune your dampers based on data feedback
  • Expand to external CANBUS modules for accurate wideband, or EGT logging
  • Advanced 3rd party CANBUS solutions like Izze Racing tire pressure and contact patch sensor system https://www.izzeracing.com/products/tire-temperature-pressure-monitoring-system.html

Wiring up and configuring your AIM Dash

Once you have chosen your mounting location for the AIM dash wiring is a relatively straight forward affair and is identical to the process for the Solo2DL.

When ordering your dash harness you will want to specify an canbus / flying lead connection.

What you will need:

  • C5 data module and 4 wire c5data module lead (your module shipped with this)
  • Some heat shrink and a soldering iron
  • the AIM flying lead harness with the CAN+/CAN-/12v/Ground leads (usually in a 4 or 6 pin deutsch connector)
  • The C5Data custom canbus library
  • A copy of race studio 3 installed on your PC (and verified access to your dash)

Connect the leads from your dash harness to their corresponding leads below. The colors may change but the pin positions never will.

Once wired you will have a lead that looks something like our below example for the MXM dash (note the C5 data lead is disconnected in this picture, you should not solder with it connected).

AIM MXM lead connected to C5Data harness

Now connect the the harness to the dash and module, and if things are wired correctly, the dash should power on once connected to the OBD port on the car.

Configuring the dash

Download and save the AIM protocol file below:

Iris Systems J1850 Bridge Canbus Lib

The very first thing we will need to do is import the custom CANBUS library by navigating to protocols, then selecting Import > AIM Protocol file and import the xc1 file you just saved

Once successful you should see the canbus lib below:

Now create a new configuration for your model of dash / logger and for ECU stream select:
Manufacturer: Iris Systems
Model: J1850 Bridge
When asked if you want to keep the previous channel names, select “NO”

Now you’re in business, setup the rest of the dash how you would like.

    Ryan,
Besides my C5 I also use my Aim Solo2 DL in a SM Miata. Is loading the file going to mess me up ?
    Thanks
    Jack

    • Ryan Delgrosso says:

Nope, create separate configs for each car, and swap back and forth. I do this regularly.

  • Tyler says:

Ryan have you tried to integrate with a motec dash yet?
Please reach out as I have some questions.
